Father Killed, Son Hospitalized in Biscayne Bay Boating Hit-and-Run

FWC seeks tips on a dark blue 20- to 30-foot boat with twin outboards.

Overview

  • A 7-foot dinghy carrying a father and son was struck in the Meloy Channel near Indian Creek and Biscayne Pointe, a busy boating corridor off Miami Beach, Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m., throwing both into the water.
  • Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pulled them from the bay and took them to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where the father died and the son remained hospitalized.
  • FWC leads the investigation and is searching for a dark blue boat about 20 to 30 feet long with two outboard motors that was last seen heading north in the channel.
  • Investigators asked anyone with information or video to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, which offers rewards up to $5,000.
  • Two teens, Enzo Avelino and Samuel Londono, said they heard screams, called 911, and told the boy to float as he held his father until crews arrived after the call first came in as a drowning.
