Overview
- The alleged assault happened at Strathaird Reserve, next to Strathaird Primary School, about 3.15pm on Friday June 12 and left a 63-year-old Clyde North man critically injured who died in hospital six days later.
- A 21-year-old man of no fixed address and a 22-year-old man from Narre Warren South were arrested days after the attack and charged with recklessly causing serious injury; both remain in custody and are due back in court in July.
- Detectives from the Homicide Squad have taken control of the inquiry and will review the post-mortem to decide whether to upgrade the charges.
- Witnesses and parents at school pick-up described a violent beating involving fists and what they thought was a pole or metal torch, and bystanders provided first aid at the scene.
