Father and Teen Son Missing After Hanauma Bay Hike on Oahu

Officials plan to resume search operations after adverse weather forced teams to pause.

Overview

  • The pair left a Waikiki-area hotel for the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Ridge Trail and did not return after setting out Tuesday, prompting family to report them missing.
  • Passersby found a backpack with the father's phone and wallet near the Rock Bridge area about 8:45 a.m., and police were notified shortly after.
  • Honolulu Police, the Fire Department, Honolulu Ocean Safety and the U.S. Coast Guard launched a joint search using helicopters, a rescue boat, jet skis and Coast Guard assets.
  • Search crews extended operations along coastal waters and the trail area but suspended the mission at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday because of rough conditions and planned to resume the next morning.
  • Names of the missing 49-year-old father and his 16-year-old son have not been released and authorities say the incident remains an active, developing search-and-rescue effort.
