Fatality Near Gatley Blocks Manchester PiccadillyAirport Rail Link

Emergency services and Network Rail are managing the scene while operators run alternative services and disruption is expected until about 3pm.

Overview

  • A person was found on the tracks near Gatley and was pronounced dead, with the British Transport Police saying the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
  • National Rail has closed all lines between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, with operators warning of major disruption and cancellations that are expected to last until around 3pm.
  • Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales reported widespread route impacts, including services to Liverpool, Blackpool, Barrow-in-Furness, Windermere and Crewe.
  • To reduce passenger disruption, operators are accepting rail tickets on Metrolink trams, Bee Network buses and certain services from Avanti West Coast and others at no extra cost, and Northern has temporarily lifted ticket restrictions and highlighted Delay Repay for compensation.
  • Network Rail staff and emergency crews remain on site to manage the scene and infrastructure, and passengers are advised to check live travel updates and use arranged alternative transport.
