Fatal Level-Crossing Collision Near Ely Shuts CambridgeEly Rail Link Through Evening

Investigators are working to identify the victim, with lines between Cambridge and Ely remaining closed.

Overview

  • British Transport Police were called around 10:15am on March 3 to Dimmocks Cote level crossing on the A1123 near Ely, where one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another sustained minor injuries.
  • CrossCountry confirmed one of its trains was involved, and services operated by Great Northern and Greater Anglia are also affected across the CambridgeEly corridor.
  • All lines between Cambridge North/Waterbeach and Ely are closed, leaving no direct rail route between Cambridge and Ely and temporarily removing calls at Waterbeach.
  • Operators have revised timetables, arranged rail replacement buses between Cambridge, Cambridge North and Ely, and advised passengers to check journeys, with CrossCountry indicating no trains expected until at least 9pm.
  • The A1123 Newmarket Road at the crossing was closed in both directions, and police are appealing for witnesses as enquiries continue to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.
