Overview
- A two-vehicle collision involving a black Vauxhall Vectra and a white Citroen Dispatch occurred on the A709 near Lochfield, Lochmaben at about 7.35pm on Saturday and left one driver dead.
- The Vauxhall driver, a 50-year-old man, died shortly after the crash while two Citroen occupants, a 67-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were taken to hospital and remain in serious condition.
- Emergency services closed the A709 for roughly eight hours to allow road policing teams to examine the scene and the road reopened at about 3.30am on Sunday.
- Sergeant Wayne Carnochan of Police Scotland said enquiries are ongoing and urged anyone who saw the collision or who has relevant dash‑cam footage to contact police on 101 with reference 2788 of June 6, 2026.
- The inquiry is being led by Police Scotland’s road policing unit and its findings could determine whether charges follow and guide any local safety responses to collisions on the Dumfries–Lockerbie route.
