Family Tribute Published for Second Victim of A1(M) Crash Near Chester-le-Street

Police are seeking witnesses to help explain how the Mercedes struck the central barrier.

Overview

  • Lewis Smith, 20, who was injured in Sunday’s A1(M) crash near junction 62, died at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary the following afternoon.
  • His family released a public tribute on Friday, describing him as a “beautiful, sparkly blue-eyed boy” and confirming he died at 3pm on April 27.
  • Investigators say the Mercedes A-Class is believed to have hit the central reservation and come to rest on its roof, and driver Jordan Orrock, 20, died at the scene.
  • A second passenger, also 20, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, as the road was shut for hours to allow forensic collision work.
  • Durham Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit has an active inquiry and is asking anyone with dashcam footage or eyewitness accounts to quote incident 516 of April 26.
