Family Rescued From Stalled SkyScreamer at Six Flags St. Louis

Rescuers used a crane and harnesses to lower the four riders after on-site teams could not manually lower the 235-foot swing, leaving the cause under investigation.

Overview

  • Four people, described by the park as a family of two adults and two minors, were left dangling about 120 feet above ground when the SkyScreamer stalled around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
  • Park maintenance first attempted a manual lowering and an on-site technician climbed the structure to speak with riders before calling for specialized high-angle rescue help when those efforts failed.
  • Eureka and Metro West fire districts sent rescue technicians who used a bucket/crane and rescue harnesses to bring the two teens down first and then the two adults after roughly 2.5 to 3 hours aloft.
  • All four riders and responding personnel were lowered with no reported injuries, and crews set up a secondary rope system that was not needed during the operation.
  • Six Flags St. Louis and operator Enchanted Parks say rides receive daily operator and maintenance tests with multiple sign-offs before opening, and investigators are now examining the ride and maintenance records to determine the cause.
