Overview
- Millie Rose Hedley, 9, from Newton Aycliffe, died on December 22 less than a day after tests confirmed acute myeloid leukaemia, a fast-growing blood cancer.
- Her mother says Millie had bone pain, extreme tiredness and frequent illness for about a year, which doctors initially attributed to flu and a developing immune system.
- After she began vomiting and could not keep fluids down in December, A&E staff ran urgent checks, moved her to a specialist children’s unit, and she died soon after.
- The family will drive from Newton Aycliffe to Benidorm and back in September to raise money for Newcastle’s Great North Children's Hospital, with supporters invited to add messages to their car.
- They are also urging parents to watch for AML signs in children, including pale skin, fatigue, fevers, frequent infections, night sweats, and bone or joint pain.
