Fadnavis Launches AI and Digitisation Drive for Maharashtra Policing

The plan signals a shift to tech-led policing to speed cases and raise convictions.

Overview

  • At a half-yearly police conference on Monday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis outlined a multi-step plan that includes using artificial intelligence to flag undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, with an IIT Bombay tool still in testing.
  • He ordered the Director General of Police to digitise the full path from first information reports to chargesheets and to move evidence handling to blockchain to protect the chain of custody.
  • The Criminal Investigation Department will run AI reviews of cases from the past four to five years to spot investigative gaps and lift the conviction rate from roughly 50 percent toward a 95 percent target.
  • Police who served at least three years in the C-60 anti-Naxal unit will receive a new medal, as Fadnavis said Maoist activity is almost eliminated and noted 244 personnel died in the campaign.
  • The state is rolling out a drug-free campus campaign and a monthly district grading system to set clear targets, reward high performers, and push fixes in units that fall behind.
