Facebook Launches Mobile Passkeys for Passwordless Login

Leveraging device-stored biometrics with cryptographic keys to replace passwords on Facebook mobile ahead of its rollout in Messenger.

Overview

  • Facebook mobile apps now support passkey login using fingerprint, face scan or PIN instead of traditional passwords.
  • Passkeys protect accounts from phishing and password spraying by using unique, device-stored credentials that Meta cannot access.
  • Users can enable and manage passkeys through the Accounts Center in Facebook settings and fall back on passwords on unsupported devices.
  • The same passkey will extend to Messenger in the coming months and secure encrypted message backups at launch.
  • Passkeys also power secure autofill of payment information in Meta Pay without transmitting biometric or cryptographic data to Meta.
