FAA Unveils Mobile Clearance for Digital IFR Departure Clearances

Overview

• The FAA unveiled Mobile Clearance Thursday at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and said operational testing has expanded beyond Houston to Appleton, Wisconsin, and New Century, Kansas.
• Pilots using ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot can request IFR departure clearances through their phone or tablet and the FAA plans to begin testing app-based IFR cancellations in August.
• Operational evaluations began in May in the Houston area and now cover five participating airports with additional fall tests planned and a nationwide deployment targeted to begin in 2027.
• Clearances are returned as text from air traffic control so pilots keep a written record to review before accepting, a setup the FAA says will lower copying and read‑back errors and ease radio congestion.
• The program builds on years of FAA and MITRE work and could change routines at small and non‑towered airports by letting pilots complete or cancel IFR tasks through apps instead of making extra radio or telephone calls.
