Explosives specialists are examining a second suspicious object as investigators try to determine whether the blast points to a wider security threat in Germany.

Overview

  • An explosion occurred in front of a jewellery shop near Augsburg’s main train station at about 3:15 a.m., injuring a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man who suffered minor blast-related ear trauma.
  • Police sealed off streets, closed the station and called bomb squads and Bavaria’s state criminal police to examine a second suspicious object found near the scene.
  • Train services and the transport hub were shut for the police operation and later reopened at around 10:00 a.m. after authorities cleared the area and declared it safe.
  • Some media reports have said the device may have been a hand grenade and that the victims are Ukrainian, and police are also probing a possible organised-crime link, but officials have not confirmed those details.
  • The incident comes as Germany has raised security following recent drone and sabotage episodes that Berlin has publicly tied to foreign-state actors, and investigators say they have not yet linked the Augsburg blast to those earlier cases.
