Overview
- Holding urine for long periods can stretch and weaken bladder muscles, raise bacterial growth, and increase UTI risk; experts advise emptying every three to four hours.
- Low fluid intake concentrates urine and irritates the bladder; general guidance is roughly 1.5–2 liters of water daily, circumstances permitting.
- Smoking accounts for around half of bladder cancer cases, with smokers up to four times more likely to develop the disease.
- High intake of caffeine and alcohol is linked to more urinary symptoms, including higher incontinence risk above about 450 mg of caffeine per day and greater lower urinary tract symptoms with six to ten drinks per week.
- Good bathroom hygiene and urinating soon after sex can lower UTI risk; harsh soaps and back-to-front wiping raise the chance of infection.
