Overview
- The Royal Canadian Geographic Society and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution released the first high‑definition photos of Quest on Friday, showing the bow, deck and portholes at about 390 meters (1,280 feet) depth in the Labrador Sea.
- Researchers surveyed the site this summer using WHOI’s human‑occupied submersible Alvin, remotely operated vehicles and 5.2K video to capture imagery for underwater photogrammetry.
- The team is producing 3D digital models from the imagery to document the ship’s layout and condition and to share detailed maps with scientists and the public.
- Images show Quest largely intact but damaged, with a toppled main mast, missing bridge structures, thriving coral and fish life, and large abandoned fishing nets draped over portions of the hull that limit access.
- After the Quest work the expedition is continuing northeast toward Greenland to search for and survey the Terra Nova as part of a broader project to map Heroic Age wrecks.
