Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mitchell Crosses WA Coast as Heavy Rains Push Inland

Now a tropical low near Shark Bay, the system left mostly minor damage with flood warnings still active.

Overview

  • Bureau of Meteorology says the system crossed east of Shark Bay about 1am WST on Monday and weakened below cyclone strength as it tracked southeast over land.
  • Severe weather warnings cover the Central West, Central Wheatbelt and parts of the Gascoyne, with 50–80mm of rain widely forecast and isolated falls to about 120mm after totals such as ~133mm at Gascoyne Junction and over 100mm at Shark Bay.
  • Wind gusts reached 107km/h at Carnarvon and 85km/h at Shark Bay on Monday, following earlier offshore peaks of 169km/h at Legendre Island and 148km/h at Barrow Island when Mitchell was stronger.
  • Emergency services report no major damage and only about 20 calls for help over three days, though power outages persist for hundreds in the Gascoyne and some roads and schools remain closed.
  • Evacuation centres are operating in Carnarvon and Shark Bay as authorities manage clean‑up, monitor abnormally high tides and flood risks, and note the storm had earlier peaked at category 3 with port closures and mine evacuations.
