Ex-IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur Arrested in 1999 Deoria Plot Fraud Case, Sent to 14-Day Custody

Police cite an SIT probe that assembled decades-old documents to support charges of forgery, cheating, conspiracy.

Overview

  • Lucknow Police detained Thakur in the early hours after Shahjahanpur officers intercepted a Lucknow–Delhi train, then produced him before a Deoria court that ordered 14 days' judicial custody.
  • An FIR was lodged on September 12, 2025 at Lucknow’s Talkatora police station under IPC sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, 34 and 120B, leading to the formation of a special investigation team.
  • Investigators allege Thakur, then SP Deoria, enabled an industrial plot allotment in his wife’s name using forged identities, fabricated documents and a false Bihar address, with the plot later sold for gain.
  • The SIT says it gathered documentary records in Deoria, verified identities and addresses in Bihar, and recorded witness statements before concluding there was sufficient material to proceed.
  • Thakur and his supporters contest criminality, calling it a long-running civil dispute or pressure-driven case, while reports also noted the suspension of X accounts linked to him and his wife.
