Ex-Gamekeeper David Campbell Jailed for Life for Shotgun Murder of Former Colleague

Police Scotland has apologised for its initial non-suspicious assessment, saying procedures for unexplained deaths have been overhauled.

Overview

  • Campbell, 77, was convicted by a majority verdict at the High Court in Glasgow and sentenced by Lord Scott to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years.
  • Brian Low, 65, was shot on February 16, 2024, on Leafy Lane near Pitilie in Perth and Kinross, and his body was found the next morning.
  • Jurors were shown CCTV of a hooded cyclist linked to Campbell’s wife’s e-bike, with footage of him taping over his doorbell camera before traveling to and from the area around the time of the killing.
  • Forensic work found soil on the bicycle consistent with the scene, and a post-mortem recorded around 30 shotgun pellet injuries, with pellets even falling from the body bag at the mortuary.
  • Prosecutors said Campbell harboured a long-standing grievance tied to alleged raptor-poisoning claims; he denied the murder and claimed he was at home, as seven ancillary charges were withdrawn during the trial.
