Ex-Congressional Aide Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud Over Nearly $23,000 Taken From Ex-Boss

The case underscores the risks posed by limited use of electronic banking.

Overview

  • Courtney Hruska, who pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, admitted one count of wire fraud and will be sentenced June 23 by U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema.
  • Prosecutors said she used her former employer’s bank account to pay her own credit card bills 10 times between Aug. 19, 2023 and July 30, 2024, taking $22,865.07.
  • Court filings say the lawmaker shared personal banking details with Hruska during her 2015–2022 service in the office, and Hruska kept that information after leaving for a U.S. Department of Agriculture job.
  • Investigators said Hruska falsely blamed “dark web” hackers as the victim discovered the theft only after a returned check due to no electronic banking alerts, which left less than 9% recoverable.
  • Filings do not name the member, though news reports link the case to Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and the plea requires full restitution, surrender of a passport, and no possession of firearms.
