EVs Top Diesel in EU as BYD Soars, Tesla Slides and VW Leads

New ACEA data confirm a faster shift to electrified powertrains across Europe.

Overview

  • Total 2025 registrations in the EU, EFTA and UK rose 2.4% to 13,271,270, according to ACEA.
  • Battery-electric registrations increased 29.7% to 2,585,187, and in the EU they reached a 17.4% market share versus diesel’s 8.9% as diesel volumes fell 24%.
  • Volkswagen Group remained Europe’s top seller with about a 26.9% share and nearly 3.6 million sales, followed by Stellantis at 14.3% and Renault Group at 10.2%.
  • BYD’s European registrations surged to roughly 187,000 in 2025, up about 268% year over year.
  • Tesla’s European registrations declined sharply, with reports ranging from about −27% to −38%, and BEV growth was heavily concentrated in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
