Everest Sees Record More Than 1,000 Summits This Spring

China’s closure of the northern route and a surge in permits concentrated climbers on Nepal’s side, prompting renewed calls for limits to ease dangerous crowding.

  • Nepalese authorities told AFP on Wednesday that provisional tallies show more than 1,000 climbers reached Everest this spring and that the final figure is still being confirmed.
  • A single-day record of 275 summit arrivals was recorded on 21 May, producing intense bottlenecks in the final stretch above 8,000 meters known as the death zone.
  • Officials issued 494 permits to foreign climbers this season, a high number that, together with the closed northern route in China, concentrated traffic on the south side.
  • Five climbers died this season — two Indians and three Nepalis — while guides said improved logistics have reduced some risks but weather remains the main hazard.
  • Veteran Sherpas highlighted crowding after the season and one of them, Kami Rita Sherpa, set a new individual record with his 32nd Everest summit on 24 May.
