Evacuation Orders Lifted in Comox Valley as Floodwaters Recede

Officials begin damage assessments with support centres open for affected residents.

The Comox Valley Regional District has issued an Evacuation Order for Maple Pool Campground and some properties on Stephen and Headquarters roads due to the immediate danger to life safety caused by flooding.

Overview

  • The Emergency Operations Centre said evacuation alerts were cancelled and all orders rescinded at 11:45 a.m. Saturday for parts of Courtenay and Electoral Area B after improved conditions and safety checks.
  • An Emergency Social Services reception centre at the Lower Native Sons Hall remains available, with about 150 people affected and 41 receiving support to date.
  • Courtenay has closed multiple parks and trails due to flood impacts, and residents are urged to avoid waterways as levels continue to fall.
  • The response followed a state of local emergency, targeted evacuations at Maple Pool Campground and properties on Stephen and Headquarters roads, and rescues by first responders and search-and-rescue teams.
  • Dove Creek flows were measured at 161 m³/s during the peak—above 100-year flood expectations—and a washout closed Highway 28 west of Campbell River.
