Overview
- Eurostat’s final reading published on July 17 showed annual headline inflation at 2.8%, core inflation at 2.4%, and a monthly fall of 0.1%, with Q2 CPI averaging 3.0% below the ECB’s 3.2% forecast.
- Lower energy prices were the main driver of the monthly drop, with the energy component falling sharply and food and services inflation also easing during June.
- The ECB raised interest rates in June citing price risks from the Middle East and now has modest short-term leeway because of the June cooling.
- Inflation remains uneven across member states, ranging from about 1.0% in Sweden to roughly 9.2% in Romania, which means households and businesses will feel very different price pressures across the euro area.
- Policymakers and markets will watch oil and gas prices and services costs over the summer for signs that renewed geopolitical shocks could reverse the improvement and spark second-round inflation effects.
