Eurowings A320 Struck by Wake Turbulence From Emirates A380, Several Lightly Injured

Flight recorders have been secured for an investigation into whether separation rules or air traffic control procedures allowed the A320 to enter a dangerous wake vortex.

Overview

  • The incident occurred when Eurowings flight EW635 was climbing over Bosnia and Herzegovina and entered the wake turbulence of an Emirates A380, producing sudden severe motion in the cabin.
  • The crew stopped the climb, returned to 36,000 feet and continued to land safely at Cologne/Bonn where medical teams treated the injured.
  • Most reports and the airline say four passengers and one flight attendant were lightly injured but some accounts cite six light injuries, creating a small discrepancy in the tally.
  • Aviation data cited the aircraft separation at about 7.6 nautical miles on the same flight level, a distance close to ICAO guidance for A380 wake separation and a focus for investigators.
  • Cockpit voice and flight data recorders were removed and secured and investigators will review flight data, ATC records and procedures to determine causes and possible changes to separation or routing practices.
