European Commission Confirms Cyberattack on Europa.eu Cloud Platform

Investigators are assessing possible data loss from the EU’s shared web platform.

Overview

  • The Commission said it detected a cyberattack on Tuesday on the cloud system that runs Europa.eu, and it has contained the incident.
  • Early checks indicate data was taken from some websites that sit on the Europa.eu platform.
  • The Commission said its internal systems were not affected, and it is notifying EU institutions that could be exposed as CERT-EU continues the probe.
  • BleepingComputer reported that at least one Amazon Web Services account was accessed and that a threat actor claimed to have taken more than 350 GB of data, which the Commission has not verified.
  • A group calling itself ShinyHunters later claimed responsibility on a leak site and referenced large data dumps, a claim now under investigation.
