Europe Records At Least 30,000 Excess Deaths in Heatwave Summer

Public-health agencies say the scale of the deaths shows extreme heat is straining care and health systems.

  • Germany’s Robert Koch Institute estimated roughly 14,000 heat‑related deaths for the summer, including about 9,600 deaths in calendar week 26 (22–28 June) when many areas recorded highs above 41°C.
  • Officials stress these totals are provisional, based on data from 23 countries with gaps in eastern Europe, and say numbers will be refined as late reports and fuller national statistics arrive.
