Euro NCAP Overhaul Rewrites Safety Rankings as Zeekr Edges BMW

The 2026 four-area test scores pre-crash, crash and post-crash performance with new electric-vehicle rules that change which systems decide star ratings.

Overview

  • Euro NCAP introduced its biggest rating change since 2009 by restructuring assessments into four areas: safe driving, collision avoidance, crash protection and post-crash safety.
  • Under the new system the BMW iX3 50 xDrive earned five stars and posted sub-scores of about 73% for safe driving, 83% for collision avoidance, 86% for crash protection and 95% for post-crash safety.
  • The Zeekr 7GT also received five stars and outscored the BMW in three of the four areas, notably scoring higher on safe driving, collision avoidance and crash protection while matching BMW on post-crash safety.
  • The revised rules add EV-specific checks such as whether the high-voltage battery can be isolated and whether electric door handles and rescue access remain functional after a crash, which can materially affect post-crash scores.
  • The new methodology shifts what manufacturers must prioritize and gives buyers clearer detail about real-world safety across the full accident timeline, and it is likely to change comparative rankings across more models as more test results appear.
