Ethan Nwaneri Called Into England’s World Cup Training Camp

The Arsenal teenager will train with the senior squad in Florida to help manage player minutes and to be assessed for possible minutes in warm-up friendlies.

Overview

  • England confirmed on Saturday that 19-year-old Ethan Nwaneri will join Thomas Tuchel’s pre-World Cup camp in Florida as a training addition rather than as a member of the 26-man tournament squad.
  • Nwaneri will join Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha and Fulham’s Josh King in the supplementary group brought in to keep squad numbers up while some senior players finish club commitments.
  • The camp begins on June 1 in Palm Beach with warm-up friendlies scheduled against New Zealand in Tampa and Costa Rica in Orlando before England move to Kansas City ahead of the tournament.
  • Nwaneri spent the second half of the season on loan at Marseille where he started only three of 16 matches after an early promising spell under Roberto De Zerbi, a pattern that explains why he is a training call-up rather than a full squad pick.
  • Tuchel has praised the attitude of young players who missed the 26-man list and will use the Florida camp to evaluate character and fitness while also managing match minutes for those who join late because of club fixtures.
