Overview
- Essex Police issued a fresh appeal for the author of a July 2025 anonymous letter about the Harlow house fire and asked them to contact detectives via the force’s public portal.
- Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe said the writer described the “nightmare” of holding back information and pledged they would be treated fairly if they come forward.
- Forensic tests on the letter did not identify the sender, and police say prior handling by several people before it reached the lead investigator limited tracing.
- The case, known as Operation Shakespeare, remains a murder inquiry with no charges after work by more than 70 staff, about 500 witness statements, and nearly 2,000 items reviewed.
- The fire broke out around 1:40am on October 15, 2012, as a nearby silver Ford Focus was also set alight, and a 2014 inquest recorded an open conclusion due to insufficient evidence.
