ESPN Greenlights Four-Part Docuseries 'Setting the Tempo' on Toronto Tempo

The series will follow the team’s women leaders and celebrity owners as they build Canada’s first WNBA franchise, signaling rising investment in women’s basketball.

Overview

  • ESPN officially greenlit the four-episode series on Monday, June 15, crediting executive producers Serena Williams, Ryan Reynolds, Robin Roberts, Lilly Singh and Masai Ujiri.
  • Cameras followed the Tempo’s front office and coaching staff during roster assembly and preseason work, with the series planned to spotlight head coach Sandy Brondello and general manager Monica Wright Rogers.
  • Canadian filmmaker Kathleen Jayme will direct and the project is produced by Rock’n Robin Productions in association with Maximum Effort, Ujiri Productions and Nine Two Six Productions.
  • ESPN and producers say the documentary offers behind-the-scenes access to scouting, strategy meetings and hiring decisions, though no premiere date or distribution platform has been announced.
  • The series arrives as the WNBA expands into Canada amid rising attendance, TV viewership and new collective-bargaining terms that changed roster timing and boosted player pay.
