ESPN Footage Shows Browns Rebuffed Cowboys’ Offer To Stay At No. 9 For Spencer Fano

The behind-the-scenes clips clarify Cleveland valued a high-floor left tackle over extra picks.

Overview

  • ESPN’s The Pick Is In, aired Monday, showed Dallas offering picks 12 and 20 plus a fifth for Cleveland’s 9 and 24, which the Browns declined while on the clock.
  • General manager Andrew Berry was recorded saying the team would pick from three targets at No. 9: tackle Spencer Fano, receiver Jordyn Tyson and tackle Francis Mauigoa.
  • National scout Zach Ayers argued for Fano, giving him an “orange dot” for elite character and saying he was the best tackle in the draft based on his tape and traits.
  • Cleveland took Fano at 9, the Giants followed with Mauigoa at 10, and the Cowboys moved up with Miami to No. 11 to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
  • Earlier, the Browns slid from No. 6 to No. 9 in a deal with the Chiefs for third- and fifth-round picks and later used No. 24 on Texas A&M wideout KC Concepcion.
