ESA and DLR Open Recruitment for 100-Day Isolation and Bed-Rest Spaceflight Analogue Studies in Cologne

The studies target the health and performance risks of long voyages to the Moon and Mars by validating practical countermeasures.

Overview

  • DLR is accepting applications through 12 December 2025 via dlr-probandensuche.de for two terrestrial astronaut studies at its :envihab facility in Cologne.
  • SOLIS100 will place six participants in a simulated space station for 100 days, pays €23,000, and requires ages 25–55, physical fitness, a bachelor’s degree, and very good English.
  • The isolation campaign is planned for 7 April to 7 August 2026, spanning 126 days including preparation and recovery.
  • The SMC3 bed‑rest study, run with NASA, seeks twelve participants for an 88‑day program with 60 days at 6° head‑down tilt and offers €18,000; good German is required.
  • Both campaigns investigate health, performance and sensorimotor changes and will test compact countermeasures such as balance training, electromyostimulation and a GravityBed concept.
