Eric Simons Set to Join England Test Coaching Team
The hire gives Stephen Fleming a single, dedicated bowling coach to create a consistent voice for the Test attack.
Overview
- Simons is reported to be the first confirmed appointment to Fleming’s Test backroom and is expected to be formally announced on Monday when the ECB publishes the latest central contracts.
- Fleming chose Simons because of a long-running partnership in franchise cricket with Chennai Super Kings, Joburg Super Kings and the Texas Super Kings, which provides immediate working familiarity.
- Simons brings wide experience as a former South Africa head coach and ex-India bowling coach but has not worked in English Test conditions and will need to adapt to the Dukes ball and the county game.
- England have split coaching by format with Fleming running Tests and Brendon McCullum retaining the white-ball programme, and short-term staff for the Pakistan one-day tri-series include David Saker, Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy and Carl Hopkinson.
- The appointment aims to end the recent rotation of fast-bowling consultants by giving the Test attack a single reference point, a change that could stabilise long-term planning for the World Test Championship and Ashes but may create coordination challenges for players who move between formats.
