Overview

  • The European Patent Office, which released its 2025 Technology Dashboard on Tuesday, reported a record 201,974 applications, a 1.4% rise from 2024.
  • Applications from outside Europe grew 2.1%, led by sharp gains from China and South Korea.
  • Country standings shifted as the United States stayed first with about 47,008 filings (down 1.6%), Germany held second with 24,476 (down 2.2%), and China rose about 9.7% to overtake Japan for third.
  • Computer technology was the largest field with 17,844 applications, driven by artificial intelligence up 9.5% and quantum technologies up 37.9%, while digital communication also posted strong growth.
