EPCR Confirms 2026/27 Champions Cup and Challenge Cup Pool Fixtures and New Qualification Rules

The published schedule and rule changes change how teams qualify for the last 16 and sharpen incentives for wins and try-scoring across a pool phase that starts in October.

Overview

  • EPCR published the full 2026/27 pool fixtures, kick‑off times and match weekends for both the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, with pool play running October–January and finals scheduled for Lyon’s OL Stadium in May 2027.
  • Munster was placed in Pool 3 with Union Bordeaux Bègles, DHL Stormers, Racing 92, Bristol Bears and Gloucester Rugby and will open at home to Racing 92 on the weekend of 16–18 October pending a venue decision.
  • Two rule changes take effect: only the top three teams in each pool automatically qualify for the Round of 16 and the four remaining places go to the highest match‑point teams across all pools, and the offensive bonus point will be awarded only for scoring three or more tries more than the opponent.
  • Several South African franchises have confirmed Round 1 fixtures and kick‑off times, creating long intercontinental travel for European teams visiting the Lions, Stormers and Bulls and concentrating key cross‑hemisphere ties early in the pool stage.
  • A practical operational issue remains that Munster is seeking Cork GAA approval to host its Round 1 match at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and media outlets have already flagged certain draws as notably testing for clubs chasing the tighter qualification spots.
