Overview
- England’s new Simpler Recycling rules are now in effect, setting standard kerbside collections for food, garden waste, paper and card, mixed dry recyclables, and general rubbish.
- Government guidance names 37 example items that crews will not collect at the kerb, including drinking glasses, glass cookware like Pyrex, ceramics, cutlery, pots and pans, and many coffee pods.
- Non-packaging glass and similar items are excluded because they contaminate recycling streams or melt at different temperatures during processing.
- A grace period is in place and some councils have exemptions reported to last until 2040, so residents are told to check local instructions before putting items out.
- Many excluded items can go to Household Waste and Recycling Centres or retailer take-back points, and local reports say councils can issue fines up to £400 for breaking bin rules.
