England Drop Stokes and Atkinson as Nightclub Incident Triggers Regulator Probe

Referral to the independent Cricket Regulator plus omission of two players put England’s leadership under fresh scrutiny

Overview

  • In the early hours of Monday, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke a team midnight curfew after a night out in Chelsea that ended with a confrontation in which a Saracens player struck a member of England’s security staff.
  • England have made Stokes and Atkinson unavailable for selection for the second Test and the ECB has opened a formal inquiry that has been referred to the independent Cricket Regulator and to Saracens for parallel review.
  • Joe Root has been named interim Test captain for the next match at The Oval and vice-captain Harry Brook was passed over partly because of a prior nightclub incident and concerns about his workload.
  • Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, said no rash decisions will be taken on Stokes’ long-term future and confirmed he is considering stronger conduct measures including a possible blanket alcohol ban.
  • The episode renews scrutiny of a recurring off-field culture problem that prompted a curfew earlier this year and leaves reputational pressure on players, coaches and administrators while investigations continue.
