Engineers Warn Severe Sediment Blockage in Piura River Cuts Flood Capacity and Demands Immediate Dredging

A high probability of a Niño event raises the risk of heavy rains through early 2027 and creates pressure to carry out fast, technically guided river maintenance.

  • CIP Piura’s June 24 inspection found acute colmatación—heavy sediment build-up—that has sharply reduced the Piura River’s ability to carry flood flows and identified four priority intervention sites: Canal Chutuque, downstream of Puente Independencia, Catacaos, and urban stretches of the river.
  • Engineers urged rapid, technically backed descolmatación (dredging and channel maintenance) and said there is a narrow window of roughly four months to complete short-term works before the rainy season.
  • National forecasts from ENFEN and reporting by the WMO put the chance of a Niño Global at about 65% and keep an El Niño Costero alert into February 2027, increasing the odds of the heavy rains that would test the river’s reduced capacity.
  • Regional emergency agencies reported large exposures: INDECI estimates 20 of 65 Piura districts are at very high risk with about 400,000 people in high-risk districts and more than one million potentially affected in extreme scenarios, while COER Lambayeque lists 101 critical points and roughly 150,000 people at risk.
  • Preparedness is constrained by missing municipal prevention plans, limited budgets and technical staff, and unfinished long-term flood-control projects, leaving outcomes dependent on rapid funding, interagency coordination and properly modeled maintenance works to avoid large-scale displacement and crop losses.
