Engine Blast Forces Swiss A330 to Abort Delhi Takeoff, Injuring Six

An airline task force will inspect the jet to determine the cause.

Overview

  • The Zurich-bound A330-300, which began its takeoff early Sunday in New Delhi, aborted after a loud bang and sparks from the left engine.
  • After roughly ten minutes on the runway, the crew ordered an evacuation using emergency slides, and a stair was used for those who could not slide.
  • Six passengers received medical care, with local reports pointing to treatment at Medanta Hospital in Delhi, and the crew was not hurt.
  • Airport officials said required safety protocols were carried out and regular operations continued even as runway 28 stayed closed until the jet was removed.
  • Swiss said the cause is not yet known, set up a task force, and is sending technical specialists to examine the 2011-built aircraft and arrange care and rebooking for passengers.
