Enbridge Breaks Ground on $4B Sunrise Pipeline Expansion in British Columbia

Ottawa says the project will add about 300 million cubic feet per day of capacity to support LNG customers, deliver roughly 2,500 construction jobs, and aim for service by late 2028.

Overview

  • Construction officially began on the Sunrise Expansion Program on July 20, 2026, after federal approval in April and a rapid move from permitting to ground work.
  • The $4-billion Enbridge project will add roughly 139–140 kilometres of pipeline looping and related upgrades to increase Westcoast system capacity by about 300 million cubic feet per day.
  • The federal government and Enbridge say the build will create about 2,500 jobs during construction, generate roughly $700 million in tax revenue, and add over $3 billion to Canada’s GDP.
  • The expansion builds on Indigenous participation after 38 First Nations took a 12.5% ownership stake last year and will use Canadian-made materials, including 100% Canadian-melted steel from InterPro Pipe + Steel.
  • Supporters say the work will help supply domestic needs and LNG export projects such as Woodfibre LNG, while critics warn the new infrastructure could lock in fossil-fuel emissions and risk stranded assets if export demand shifts.
