Emirates Breaks Ground on $5.1 Billion Engineering Complex at Dubai South

The project signals Dubai’s push to scale Al Maktoum into a full-service aviation hub.

Overview

  • Emirates, which held a groundbreaking Monday, began building a $5.1 billion maintenance complex at Al Maktoum International to be delivered by China Railway Construction Corporation with Artelia as consultant.
  • The facility will cover about 1.1 million square meters and include hangars able to service 28 wide-body aircraft at the same time.
  • Key features include a 285-meter free-span hangar, two paint hangars, 77,000 square meters of workshops, 380,000 square meters of storage and logistics, and 65,000 square meters of offices and training space.
  • Construction is scheduled to finish by mid-2030, and the site will first handle heavy maintenance and overflow work from Emirates’ existing engineering center at Dubai International Airport.
  • All buildings are targeting LEED Platinum with rooftop solar panels, aligning the complex with Dubai South’s broader plan to grow Al Maktoum International into a larger aviation center.
