Overview

  • The El Gamal family, re-detained Saturday during a required ICE check-in in the Denver area, was put on a flight toward Michigan before a judge stepped in.
  • U.S. District Judge Fred Biery granted an emergency stay that stopped removal, and flight-tracking showed the plane turned back to Michigan after the order.
  • Family attorneys said they filed rapid appeals in multiple courts, and a Colorado federal judge later ordered the family not be removed from the state or the U.S. pending further proceedings.
  • The Department of Homeland Security defended the enforcement move, said the family received full due process, and criticized the Texas judge’s release order as putting a terrorist’s family back on U.S. streets.
  • The family had spent more than 10 months in the Dilley detention center, reported poor medical care including an ER visit for the mother, and the FBI testified it found no evidence the family knew of the father’s alleged attack.
