ElevenLabs Licenses Stan Lee’s Voice and Likeness for Commercial Use

A paid licensing path for Stan Lee’s recreated voice has been established with limits on image and video generation.

Overview

  • A deal announced May 27 between ElevenLabs and Stan Lee Universe adds Stan Lee to ElevenLabs’ Iconic Marketplace and ElevenReader and launches a Stan Lee Book Club with Treasure Island as the first title.
  • ElevenLabs says the AI voice was trained on professional recordings, interviews and archival audiovisual material to reproduce Stan Lee’s cadence and tone.
  • Commercial uses such as films, TV and advertising will require direct licensing and coordination with Stan Lee Universe while generated images and videos are currently limited to non‑commercial use.
  • Stan Lee Universe framed the project as a way to continue Lee’s bond with fans, but the rollout has prompted public and industry debate over the ethics of digitally reviving deceased celebrities.
  • The agreement follows ElevenLabs’ recent fundraising and sits inside a wider trend of AI recreations, which could expand new revenue streams for estates while raising legal and regulatory questions about control and authenticity.
