Electric Cars Hit 25.6% Share of New Sales in 17 European Markets

The mid‑year surge signals faster electrification, creating new pressure on charging networks and national policy.

Overview

  • More than 1.24 million fully electric cars were sold in the first half of 2026, a 33.7% increase from a year earlier.
  • June registrations across the 17 tracked markets rose 39.5% year‑on‑year to 275,060 vehicles, giving battery EVs a 25.6% share of new-car sales that month.
  • Germany remains the largest market by volume with 367,388 BEVs in H1 and a 48.6% rise year‑on‑year, including 84,057 new EVs in June.
  • Adoption is highly uneven: Norway dominated by share with about 97% EVs in H1, several smaller markets set monthly records, and large countries such as Poland, Czechia and Italy stayed well below the continental average.
  • The faster growth will increase demand for public charging and feed into policy choices on incentives, grid upgrades and used‑EV supply, which will matter for consumers, local utilities and carmakers.
