Election Commission Confirms Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls Will Be Held On Time

The chief election commissioner said the Constitution requires elections before the assembly term ends and that Census work can be extended to avoid a clash with the poll schedule.

  • The chief election commissioner told reporters on Friday that Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are constitutionally due and will be held on the normal timetable in February–March 2027.
  • The commission said the Census schedule is a separate statutory process and can be extended if it conflicts with the constitutional timetable for elections.
  • By-elections for the Ghosi, Duddhi and Faridpur seats will not be held because they fall within a year of the full state poll, a step the commission said saves resources and avoids duplicate voting.
  • The Election Commission said there is currently no plan for online voting because the Constitution does not provide for it and the panel must work within existing legal frameworks.
  • Officials noted recent workloads shaped scheduling: a Special Intensive Revision of rolls in UP ran until April 10 and the commission reported 786 cases filed against it in the past year with 785 decided in its favour and one decided against it.
