Elderly Farmer Dies After Falling Into Grain Silo at Orrell Farm

Rescue teams cut open a damaged silo to reach the man and the Health and Safety Executive has opened an investigation.

Overview

  • Emergency services responded to an industrial accident at Orrell Farm on Orrell Lane in Burscough on Thursday 21 May and found a man in his 80s deceased at the scene.
  • Fire crews, an urban search-and-rescue team and paramedics spent hours on site and firefighters reportedly cut open a silo to try to reach the casualty.
  • Lancashire Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious and specially trained officers are supporting the family.
  • The Health and Safety Executive confirmed it is investigating the work-related incident and police will pass a file to the coroner in due course.
  • Local reporting and scene photos show a hole in a silo and large piles of grain beside the structures, a detail that highlights known entrapment hazards in bulk grain and that could shape HSE findings and future farm safety guidance.
