ELA-Led Walkout Sees Limited Impact in Basque Concertado Schools

The stoppage sought enforcement of a nearly two-year-old deal to cut teachers’ weekly lective hours that unions say is still not applied across all centers.

Overview

  • ELA reactivated mobilizations and held the strike on Tuesday, 20 January, across initiative-social schools in Euskadi.
  • Although ELA holds 58% union representation in the sector, Steilas, CC OO, LAB and UGT did not back the walkout despite agreeing with the demands.
  • ELA reported satisfactory but uneven participation, citing stronger follow-up at El Pilar and San Vicente de Paúl in Irun.
  • The protest targeted employers Kristau Eskola and AICE-IZEA over what ELA describes as noncompliance with commitments from the previous agreement.
  • The dispute affects about 200 schools with roughly 130,000 students and 9,000 staff, and no resolution has been announced.
