El Al Orders Up To 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in $1.5 Billion Fleet Expansion

The carrier aims to lock in long-haul growth after gaining market share during the Gaza and Iran conflicts.

Overview

  • El Al, which announced the deal Thursday, will take six 787-9s and convert four options to the larger 787-10 for delivery in 2030–2032.
  • The package is valued at about $1.5 billion, with financing to be set closer to the delivery dates.
  • The airline also secured options for up to six additional 787s slated to arrive in 2033–2035.
  • El Al operates 17 Dreamliners today and projects 28 by the end of the decade, with a possible rise to 34 if all options are exercised.
  • The expansion follows a near-monopoly on Israel routes after many foreign carriers suspended service, which boosted profits but drew complaints about high fares.
