Eid Rains Disrupt Karachi as PMD Flags Unstable Weather Ahead

The weather office warns of a new western system later this week that could bring strong winds with sudden downpours to the city.

Overview

  • Intermittent rain with thunder and lightning on the first day of Eid disrupted prayers citywide, with the Polo Ground congregation cancelled and the governor offering prayers at Governor House.
  • Official readings showed the highest rainfall at Jinnah Terminal at about 13.2 mm, with lower totals at Gulshan-e-Hadeed, PAF Masroor, the Old Airport area and other stations across Karachi.
  • Waterlogging hindered movement on major corridors such as University Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Nipa Chowrangi and Liaquatabad, and low-lying Saddar reported persistent pooling.
  • Power supply was cut in parts of Defence View soon after the downpour began, as cooler conditions set in with a minimum temperature near 18.5°C and high humidity reported.
  • The PMD says skies turn partly cloudy over the next two days, then a stronger western system from March 25–28 is likely to affect Sindh, including Karachi, with gusty winds, lightning risk and sudden heavy rain.
