EIA Projects 80 GW U.S. Solar, Wind and Storage Surge by 2027 as Fossil and Nuclear Dip

The shift suggests renewables will claim a larger share of the grid within a year.

Overview

  • Renewables’ utility-scale share rises from 33.4% on March 1, 2026 to 36.6% by February 28, 2027, according to the latest EIA data.
  • Solar adds about 42.6 GW, lifting its share from 12.7% to 15.5%, and wind grows by about 14.5 GW, including 4,155 MW offshore.
  • Utility-scale battery storage expands roughly 51% to about 67.6 GW over the same period.
  • EIA shows no new nuclear capacity and a net fossil-fuel decline of about 4.9 GW over the year ahead.
  • SUN DAY Campaign estimates that similar rooftop-solar growth could push renewables’ capacity near 39.7% and solar near 19.7%, with natural gas near 38.3%.
